Week in Review - Week 2, 2005

September 12, 2005

By Benjamin Miraski

The game of the season? Possible Rose Bowl preview? Well, the speculation can be ended as Texas and Ohio State played an amazing game of football to serve as a major high point of a wild weekend of football. From LSU to Notre Dame, from Texas to Florida State, the college football fan was treated to one of the top weeks in the last three years.

Vince Young was lying flat on his back. Having led Texas on a drive to the Ohio State 39-yard line, Vince's last run didn't get him very far. His teammates picked him up and helped him over to the sideline. Standing among his coaches, Young sprayed his face with water and took his helmet off as he stared off into the crowd around the stadium. Hands came up and helped him adjust his uniform, his skullcap. Young was, by his own admission, dizzy. Yet, there was a game to win. With one more swig of water, Young led his team back onto the field.

Two plays later, the Texas Longhorns were in the end zone, celebrating one of the many highlight catches on the day across the country, this one by Limas Sweed. The catch tied the game and the kick that followed gave Texas a one point lead with two minutes remaining in the game. Vince Young had once more taken his team on his back and led them to a lead in a big game.

Young's play in the Ohio State game is enough to vault him into the top two in the Heisman race. Throwing for 270 yards and adding 76 more with his legs, Young was again the reason that Texas won the big game. Playing in a hostile stadium, at night, in front of the entire country, following all the hype, this performance far surpassed his Rose Bowl performance of the year before and puts Texas on the road to a repeat appearance in that game.

Credit the Texas defense with saving this win for the Longhorns. They forced a fumble by Justin Zwick after the Sweed touchdown which allowed Texas to run out the clock. They then followed the fumble recovery with a safety of Troy Smith to seal the win with less than 20 seconds remaining. All game, the defense held Ohio State, forcing them time after time to kick field goals instead of letting them into the end zone. They consistently made up for mistakes by the offense and maybe, just as much as Young, were the most valuable players for Texas on the field. Had Ohio State been able to get into the end zone more than once, this game would have ended much differently, but the new Orange Crush made sure that didn't happen.

The loss by Ohio State doesn't keep them out of the Rose Bowl hunt. With so many games remaining on the schedule, and tough roads for USC, LSU, and Virginia Tech, still ahead, Ohio State has a chance should they remain undefeated the rest of the way. The one thing they need is to settle on a quarterback. One of the strangest things all game was the coaching of the quarterbacks for Ohio State. After Troy Smith came into the game, took over and overcame the 10 point deficit that Texas had put them in, he was again removed for Justin Zwick, who constantly had trouble getting out of the pocket. Smith should be the quarterback for the rest of the year for the Buckeyes. He adds another dimension to the offense which is missing from Zwick's game. Despite Zwick's performance in the Alamo Bowl and in week 1, Smith need to be the choice for this team.

A team that went a long way towards solving its quarterback problems was Florida State. Despite struggling early, including actually trailing late in the first half to The Citadel, Drew Weatherford was able to finally step up and ignite the offense. With only a slim three point lead at the half, one can only be imagined the speech that Bobby Bowden made in the locker room. Whatever he said was enough to see Weatherford finally step into the role with which he began the season, star quarterback. Weatherford was relieved later in the game but not before he threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns. Once his offensive line game him some time, the Seminole quarterback was finally able to complete some passes and lead the team to the end zone. Weatherford should remain as quarterback next week when they take on a very good Boston College team. The line will definitely be put to the test in the second ACC match-up of the year for Florida State. The Eagles have three sacks in their first two games and 12 tackles for loss.

LSU is allowed to have been distracted. At least, that was the way they played for three quarters. Down 17-7 as the fourth quarter began, it looked like LSU was worn down by the effects of the last few weeks. Their Rose Bowl hopes were slowly going out the window. And then, something sparked. The defense came alive, led by the special teams. A blocked field goal was returned for a touchdown. And then a blocked punt for another touchdown. All of a sudden, the scoreboard had LSU in front. Not that it would stay that way.

The lead went back and forth in a fourth quarter which saw 42 points scored between the two teams. Sam Keller didn't want his Arizona State team to lose, and neither did Jamarcus Russell. Russell's pass to Early Doucet with a minute to go in the game rivaled the catch made by Sweed in the Texas game. Doucet's catch went beyond the game, giving a reason to cheer to a state which has been mired in misery for the last few weeks. The defense came up big following the touchdown, stopping Arizona State as they tried one last time to take the lead. Les Miles left Tempe with his first win at LSU, one he will not soon forget.

Thankfully, LSU has another week off before they take on their first SEC opponent in Tennessee. LSU will need to savor this week. Because the North Texas game, postponed from week one, has been rescheduled for October 29th, LSU will not have another week off until the end of the season. Given a brutal SEC schedule with Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, and Alabama, LSU's dream season may not be looking too dreamy very soon. And North Texas is not a team to take lightly, even if they do play in the SunBelt conference. I still contend that LSU can finish without a loss. It just got a little tougher.

Before I talk about Charlie Weis, remember that Ty Willingham started 8-0. Yes, all you Notre Dame faithful who trash Ty, he led you through eight games before a loss. So, now with Weis at the helm, the fervor is at a new pitch. In two games, the offense has been clicking, and the defense stopped two teams who were supposed to have some of the top scoring threats in football. Apparently, this Notre Dame team is for real.

Their schedule doesn't get any easier for this team though, a problem which has plagued Notre Dame for the last 15 years. With Michigan State, USC, Tennessee, and Purdue, still to come, Notre Dame doesn't have a week they can rest anytime soon. Oh, and don't forget that guy named Ty who they play in two weeks.

Still, Charlie Weis has brought hope to South Bend, and a new top ten ranking for the Irish. This is the first time that Notre Dame has been in the top ten in the AP poll since 2002, Willingham's first year at the helm. Before the Irish fans get too high, they should remember what happened in that year. After finishing 10-2, Notre Dame was selected to the Gator Bowl where they were embarrassed by North Carolina State and a very impressive junior quarterback named Philip Rivers. After that game, Notre Dame, along with Florida State were called "two of the best programs in America" by NC State coach Chuck Amato. Little did Amato know what would happen the next two years to the Irish.

It is time for Notre Dame and Charlie Weis to step up and take back that mantle as one of the best teams in America. While I don't care for Notre Dame, it is good to have a foe that is fun to root against. It is even more fun when they are a great team and give you a good fight. Welcome back to the top ten, South Bend. I hope you stay there for a long time to come.

To finish, my Top 10 for Week 2:

  1. Texas - With USC off, the win was enough for me. In a hostile crowd and environment, Vince Young was tops. This is going to be a shootout for #1 all year. Rice should be no problem this week.
  2. USC - Off, so nothing to set them apart this week. Hard to keep them #1 based on Texas's win. Could be back to #1 after they crush Arkansas this week.
  3. Florida - Rolled on Louisiana Tech to cement themselves at the top of the East in the SEC. Tough division game against Tennessee this week. Could be a wake up call for Urban Meyer and the Swamp.
  4. LSU - Finally woke up in the 4th quarter behind the awesome play of their defense. Given all that has happened to them lately, you can't blame them for taking a while. A week to rest and regroup before they get Tennessee.
  5. Virginia Tech - Duke got 35 yards of offense. 35! And this just in, Marcus Vick, he's good.
  6. Tennessee - Florida and LSU loom large over the next two weeks. They have a lot to prove. Clausen better be tough or Tennessee's time in this list is short lived.
  7. Notre Dame - Apparently, they are for real. I thought I was nuts last week putting them at #10 but they didn't let down against Michigan. Michigan State has some offense to contend with. They better get right to work this week.
  8. Florida State - Looks like the quarterback issues are clearing up. The line needs to stay tough against Boston College. ACC contest should give us a clearer picture of whether Weatherford can pilot this team.
  9. Georgia - Struggled against the Ol' Ball Coach and South Carolina. Maybe the Gamecocks are better than we thought, or maybe Georgia isn't this good. The Bulldogs have two gimmes in UL-Monroe and Mississippi State before a week off and Tennessee.
  10. Cal - Justin Ayoob proved he can complete a pass. Illinois could surprise these guys given how Zook has them playing. Will have all weapons available to compete.

Others to consider: Georgia Tech and Reggie Ball, Clemson
