MRI2005: Week 8 - Whoa, Did I See That Right?

I should have known the weekend was going to have some craziness. After watching all the games last week and watching the MRI struggle to predict games day after day, you had to have known something was going to happen. And it did happen in a big way with upsets ringing all over basketball.

First it was Pittsburgh, going down to St. John's. St. John's capped quite the week for themselves, after first knocking off Louisville earlier in the week. The Red Storm took it to Pittsburgh and held tight against the comeback later in the game. Pittsburgh's loss left two unbeaten teams remaining in Division 1 but it wouldn't take long for that to change.

Duke was then just blown out of the gym by Georgetown for most of the game. The run by the Blue Devils to get it close came too late. The last second turnover by freshman Greg Paulus, coming with Duke needing a three point shot to tie, sealed the win for the Hoyas. Georgetown is quietly rebuilding their program in the new Big East which is not an easy thing to do. John Thompson III has them playing with guts and prepared to play in March and make a big noise. Duke losing meant not only that #1 had lost, but that we only had one unbeaten remaining.

And Florida didn't disappoint...if you were looking for them to lose. Tennessee and Florida battled throughout the game and a late basket by Tennessee sealed the win for the Volunteers. Bruce Pearl has immediately made huge strides in Knoxville and has surprised more than a few people with the way the program has changed so quickly. Florida's loss meant that no team will go unbeaten this year, and that makes it 30 years since any team has done so.

But Saturday wasn't just about the undefeated teams losing. It was also about big upsets elsewhere in college basketball.

Let's not overlook the job that North Dakota State did at Wisconsin. The Badgers are well known for their home court advantage. It has been put to the test, most recent in memory being last year when an undefeated Illinois went into Wisconsin and was able to pull out a win. But no one would have expected a team playing in its first year in Division 1 to do the same thing. The Badgers shot just 22% and trailed by 14 at halftime to the shock of all the fans in the Kohl Center. In the second half, the Bison held tight and managed what is one of the ten biggest upsets of the year.

And then the one I didn't even give a chance. Well, I gave it a chance, 18% to be exact. That was the percentage chance that Savannah State would break its winless streak against Division 1 opponents when they played Longwood. And break it they did, but not by much. The Tigers scored 43 points in the second half and the most important of those were two by Javon Randolph with just five seconds remaining on the clock. Randolph was by far the star of the game for Savannah State, scoring 34 while taking 40% of the Tiger shots on the night. This was the first win for Savannah State against a Division 1 team in 3 years. The last win came almost 3 years to the day against Bethune Cookman, back in 2003.

And just in case you thought the world was going to spin madly out of control, that some freak magnetic pole switch was going to doom us all, don't fret. All three undefeated teams lost on the road, so chances were that one of them was going to fall. Savannah State was playing in one of the 5 games that gave them the best chance to win all season long and it took an almost buzzer beater for them to pull it out. The Bison of North Dakota State are one of the top independent teams, staying tough in their battle with independent favorite Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for that title. These things happen, we just don't expect it all to happen within 12 hours.

Despite the loss, Duke holds on to the top spot in the MRI this week and the only change in the Top 5 has Texas and Memphis switching places. I can't say the rest of the rankings held that strong so you will just have to see for yourselves.
