Heisman Watch 2007-8, Week 1
You can't project the Heisman out of the first week of games. Although, last year, I vaulted Troy Smith from third in my pre-season poll to #1 after his first week. So, maybe the guy I put on top after Week 1 will win it.
But there are a lot of games remaining. In my Top 10 last year were Drew Tate, Garrett Wolfe, Kenny Irons, Calvin Johnson, and Ted Ginn. None of those guys ended up with a trip to New York. So being on the watch early doesn't actually mean anything.
Still, dreams can be crushed after week 1. Just look at Marshawn Lynch's lackluster game against Tennessee as proof. The remainder of his season should have had him at least in contention or in the discussion. Nothing is a given in this race.
Time to look at this week's watch board and try to sort the whole thing out.
- Darren McFadden (RB Arkansas): 24 att., 151 yds, 1 TD vs. Troy - Oh, and he threw a 42 yard touchdown pass. The most complete player in the college game didn't do anything to hurt his chances the first week. Now he team needs to step up and help him by staying in contention in the SEC all season.
- Colt Brennan (QB Hawaii): 34/40, 416 yds, 6 TD vs. Northern Colorado - Oh, and that's just in one half. Brennan sat on the bench for the second half as his team did what the upper division should do to a visiting FCS team. More performances like this will make sure that the voters don't forget that there is a team in Hawaii
- Brian Brohm (QB Louisville): 16/21, 375 yds, 4 TD vs. Murray State - Oh, who knew that when Brohm did this on Thursday night, it would only be the second best dressing down of a visiting FCS team. Brohm and Louisville have a lot of weapons and that could help Brohm stay high on this list all year long.
- John David Booty (QB USC): 21/32, 206 yds, 3 TD, 1 INT vs. Idaho - Oh, how I hate putting Booty on this list, but he is the top quarterback on the nation's top team. That always accounts for something. Looking at the two quarterbacks above him, he has a lot more to show moving forward to get to New York.
- Mike Hart (RB Michigan): 23 att., 188 yds, 3 TD vs. Appalachian State - Oh, I know they lost the game, but Hart can't be blamed. Another week, still no funbles.
- Ray Rice (RB Rutgers): 25 att., 184 yds, 3 TD vs. Buffalo
- Steve Slaton (RB WV): 16 att., 109 yds, 3 TD vs. Western Michigan
- Tashard Choice (RB Georgia Tech): 26 att., 196 yds, 2 TD vs. Notre Dame
- Ian Johnson (RB Boise State): 18 att., 128 yds, 3 TD vs. Weber State
