Heisman Watch 2007-8, Week 5

October 4, 2007

By Benjamin Miraski

The Heisman TrophySo, four weeks after the last Heisman Watch, I thought it was time to bring it back. This is especially important since one of the most intriguing candidates for the trophy is playing tonight in the person of Andre Woodson.

Yes, the quarterback for the Kentucky Wildcats is getting some serious consideration in the media. It is funny that I laughed when people were picking him at the beginning of the season as their sleeper pick. Now it looks like that sleeper has a real shot, especially with the way that everything has been going in terms of actual game results.

Now the Heisman guru at Heisman Pundit doesn't seem to think that Woodson has a real chance, especially as Woodson and Kentucky's schedule gets considerably harder over the next few weeks. But for now, Woodson looks to be the best quarterback in the country. A few really strong games even in a losing effort could almost cement Woodson's chances to be in New York

Here is a look at the way I would have the main contenders ranked:

    Andre Woodson
  1. Andre Woodson (QB Kentucky) - 67.1%, 1307 yds, 16 TD, 1 INT - As I said, he has three games starting tonight to prove that he belongs in New York. If the Wildcats win two of the three, he is almost guaranteed a place on stage.
  2. Darren McFadden (RB Arkansas) - 657 yds, 6 TD, 6.3 avg - No doubt on this one. McFadden has the most to gain when Woodson has a bad game. Everyone is high on McFadden even with Arkansas's struggles, but the lack of a passing game in Fayetteville could hinder some of his eye popping numbers. Probably still his award to lose.
  3. Michael Hart (RB Michigan) - 761 yds rush, 7 TD, 4.8 avg - I know, Michigan has lost two games this season already, but Hart isn't the reason for that. He might be one of the few reasons to keep watching the Wolverines this season. I know I am a sucker for Hart, because I think he is the smartest and most dependable running back in the game today. Having Michigan out of the National Title picture huts him, but give them a few high profile games in the Big Ten (like Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Ohio State to end the year), and people will quickly remember his name.
  4. Matt Ryan (QB Boston College) - 61%, 1545 yds, 11 TD, 5 INT - Ryan's placement is more a matter of circumstance than anything else. In this field, having a team with no losses behind you really helps. And Boston College being on the East Coast also helps. However, you can continue to have games like the one against Massachusetts and hope to win the award. This is a star fading fast.
  5. DeSean Jackson (WR Cal) - 28 rec, 312 yds, 2 TD, 101 yds rush, 1 TD, "Devin Hester" - I hate, hate, hate wide receivers for the Heisman. I didn't like Calvin Johnson last season, and I really don't like DeSean Jackson this year. Part of the reason is that they don't control their own fate. They have to be thrown to. Jackson helps himself a little bit by being a return man, but he has only had one big game as a receiver all year. The two games prior to this last week against Oregon, Jackson was almost not even there. He is in my 5 for now, but this is another star who will fade quickly for me.
  6. Tim Tebow (QB Florida) - 69.7%, 1297 yds, 11 TD, 2 INT, 433 yds rush, 8 TD - Tebow is a real interesting mark on this list. Of the quarterback candidates, he has the best passer rating, and the best all around stats, including on the ground. He can quickly move up the rankings as I have them given he does two things. First, do something spectacular against LSU this weekend. Second, outperform Woodson against Kentucky. For the second, he has to do it with his arm and not his legs. Urban Meyer needs to get him a running back quickly, or Tebow will be on the sidelines with a concussion rather than in the pocket.
  7. Brian Brohm (QB Louisville) - 66.7%, 1948 yds, 16 TD, 4 INT - You have the most explosive offense in the league. You have the worst defense in the league. The defense is killing your chances for the Heisman, and your last game against North Carolina State was not spectacular, despite the win. Still has a chance to get an invite to New York, but I think Louisville's team is hurting him.
  8. Colt Brennan (QB Hawaii) - 73.1%, 1631 yds, 15 TD, 6 INT - Missing a game hurt him. Playing in Hawaii hurts him. People forgetting all about him hurts him.

People who will still get some hype, but should be done: John David Booty, Pat White, Steve Slaton, Dennis Dixon
