Heisman Watch 2007-8, Week 6
With USC's upset by Stanford, you can say goodbye to John David Booty.
With Kentucky's loss to South Carolina, mostly because of Andre Woodson's turnovers, you can almost say goodbye to his chances. He at least had done something for his candidacy prior to his bad game, and he has two more crucial games for his team still coming.
Colt Brennan keeps having to leave games with injuries. Brian Brohm's team can't seem to win them.
No, this isn't the Heisman race we expected. And so we end up with a conglomeration of candidates and I am not sure I could stand behind most of them and give you a solid reason why they should be the winner.
And so, I will go with the default of moving up my #2 pick from last week, even though he played the weakest team of all the players on this list in his Saturday game. Yes, Darren McFadden returns to the top of the mountain, but it wasn't an easy choice.
Will still half the season to play, that choice may get harder.
Here is how I rank the contenders going into Week 7 of the season:
- Darren McFadden (RB Arkansas) - 779 yds, 7 TD, 6.0 avg - Impressive numbers, sure, but not so sure that Mike Hart's aren't better on a team that still has a chance to contend for their conference title (Michigan hasn't lost a conference game yet). Would like to see a big game against Auburn, but the Tigers are probably playing better than the Razorbacks right now. This is a big week for the man everyone thought was a shoe-in for the award.
- Michael Hart (RB Michigan) - 976 yds rush, 10 TD, 5.5 avg - Eastern Michigan thought they might have a chance to put another blemish on Michigan's record until Mike hart took over. Hart has the most rushing yards in the country, the most in the history of Michigan, and would probably be deserving of the award in any normal year for Michigan. With the Big Ten schedule coming into full gear, Hart needs to keep producing. Key games left for him: Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio State.
- Matt Ryan (QB Boston College) - 62.7%, 1857 yds, 15 TD, 5 INT - Just when I was ready to call Matt Ryan dead in the water, this is what we get? A third place vote. Still, his entire candidacy rests on the success of Boston College. While I don't think he has a chance in the long run, what happens if Ryan ends up leading BC to a one loss or undefeated record? Tough games against Virginia Tech, Maryland, Clemson, and Miami (if they show up) are still left for Ryan. One thing is for sure. He can't afford to lose to Notre Dame this weekend.
- Tim Tebow (QB Florida) - 65.5%, 1455 yds, 13 TD, 3 INT, 500 yds rush, 9 TD - You would think that another loss for Florida would have Tebow tumbling, but another really good game by the sophomore against the best team in the league is keeping him here. Tebow was the reason that LSU needed to fight back in the final minutes to win this game. Tebow is close to being in the top 3 and a trip to New York. Biggest obstacle? Florida would basically have to win out from here to cement his place on stage.
- Andre Woodson (QB Kentucky) - 65.2%, 1536 yds, 18 TD, 2 INT - Woodson's turnovers on Thursday night last week against South Carolina dropped him off the map here. If I didn't think that DeSean Jackson still deserves another week to prove himself before falling off, then Woodson would be on one of the lists below. However, he has the two biggest games on his schedule left and that could change things in a hurry. Beat Florida, or LSU, and he is back in the hunt. Still a longshot, but he had a good run.
- DeSean Jackson (WR Cal) - 28 rec, 312 yds, 2 TD, 101 yds rush, 1 TD, "Devin Hester" - The biggest task for Jackson is not to disappear. He finally got himself on the radar of a lot of people by having a really good couple of games. That helped him overcome two very weak games. His numbers are still not impressive enough for me to go gaga over him like some. Oregon State shouldn't be too much of a test for him. Let's see what he does to stay on the map.

People with still a chance to make this list: Chase Daniel (let's see what he does against Oklahoma), Colt Brennan (Overcome injuries?), Brian Brohm (Overcome defensive woes of his team?), Rashard Mendenhall (Overcome not being in the spotlight to start the year?)
People who will still get some hype, but should be done: Dennis Dixon, John David Booty, Pat White, Steve Slaton
