Heisman Watch 2007-8, Week 12

The Heisman TrophyI hate injuries. Yes, I know I said that before in this spot, but I have to repeat myself. Mike Hart should have been more dominant over his last 6 games as a senior, and should have won this award. He was the first casualty.

Now, Dennis Dixon. Was there any doubt that this kid was the most valuable player to his team? Whenever he left a game, they looked like their dog had been shot. And he looked like he had been shot in the leg, tearing his ACL. Let's just hope he can recover and do something with all of the talent that he has, although I suspect he would be confined to Antwaan Randle-El status in the NFL.

And so we have to look at history for this year's award. No player has ever rushed for and passed for 20 touchdowns each during a season. No sophomore has ever won the Heisman trophy.

Well, this year saw a lot of things that have never happened before and was a year with more upsets than any anyone can remember.

Tim Tebow, welcome to the top rung of the ladder. Yes, you somewhat deserved it all season, but given the way these things go, you weren't going to get it...until now.

Now, don't screw it up against Florida State.

    Tebow for Heisman
  1. Tim Tebow (QB Florida) - 68.5%, 2870 yds, 26 TD, 6 INT, 749 yds rush, 20 TD - Don't get hurt.
  2. Pat White (QB West Virginia) - 69.0%, 1391 yds, 11 TD, 3 INT, 958 yds rush, 12 TD - This was a tough call. While Tebow puts up great numbers, a lot of it comes from him having very little to help him in the backfield. If they could find a 1200 yard rusher from an actual running back, there is no way that Tebow sets history this season. Maybe he would have the 12 touchdowns that White has, but not 20. There is also little doubt in my mind that White is more important to his team overall that Tebow. Leadership, ball control, big time plays, all come from White this season. His "off" game this season was the only thing keeping West Virginia from a perfect record right now. Can he still win? Not unless something drastic happens to Tebow against Florida State.
  3. Dennis Dixon (QB Oregon) - 67.7%, 2136 yds, 20 TD, 4 INT, 583 yds rush, 9 TD - Sorry, it had to be this way. Even missing the last two games, he is among the Top 5 players this season.
  4. Chase Daniel (QB Missouri) - 69.3%, 3590 yds, 30 TD, 9 INT, 252 yds rush, 3 TD - Great play down the stretch has Chase Daniel back in the hunt. It doesn't hurt that Missouri is also in the hunt for the BCS National Championship. Who would have thought Gary Pinkel and his team had it in them? Probably a long shot for Daniel to get anything other than maybe an invite to New York.
  5. Darren McFadden (RB Arkansas) - 1519 yds, 12 TD, 5.6 avg, 3 pass TD - You bore me. Honestly, you do. And yet, hype is going to get you to New York. Hype and because apparently this award is poison to whomever is considered the front runner. I still see too many days where you were either outshined by teammates, or had nothing to show when your team needed you.

People with still a chance to make this list: Todd Reesing (Beat the best opponent you have played all season and we will see.)

People who will still get some hype, but should be done: Michael Hart, Andre Woodson, Matt Ryan, Kevin Smith (UCF)
