Big Number Country: Big Ten Preview Week 1

September 2, 2010  |  By Alexander Miraski

Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State, Big Ten

The first weekend of games for the Big Ten conference feature some match-ups that may not look impressive, but it’s still the first game of the season, so the possibility for a letdown should never be discounted.

Ohio State is the logical choice to win the conference title again, but there are possibly five other teams that have a realistic chance at winning the last championship before the conference begins a divisional format in 2011.

Iowa and Wisconsin both return veteran lineups and have favorable schedules that should help them compete with the Buckeyes.

Penn State has a question mark at quarterback, but should still end up near the top.

Even Northwestern and Michigan State have upgraded their talent and stand an outside chance at being atop the standings.

The rest of the conference may not have the talent to compete with the teams above, but once conference play rolls around, there won’t be an easy game on the schedule.

Here’s what to expect for week one:

Marshall at Ohio State (-28) - The question is not whether the Buckeyes will win the game, but how long will Terrelle Pryor need to play? I think he won’t be needed after halftime, as the attention turns towards the Miami game next week. Buckeyes roll. Give the points.

Towson at Indiana (Off): Indiana will be without standout wide receiver Tandon Doss, who is injured. It shouldn’t matter too much, as Indiana looks avoid letting games get away from them this year (see Iowa last season). Quarterback Ben Chappell has a big game and the Hoosiers win easily.

Minnesota at Middle Tennessee State (+1.5): It’s a tough game for the Golden Gophers who go out on the road to start the season. MTSU will be without suspended quarterback Dwight Dasher, which should make the difference. Look for a close game, but give the points as Minnesota should win by a field goal

Western Michigan at Michigan State (-23.5): The offensive line and the secondary are both question marks this season for MSU. They won’t be exposed this week as WMU replaces four year starter Tim Hiller at quarterback and return to a stadium where they lost 49-14 last season. The Spartans will win fairly easy, but it won’t be a spectacular blowout. Take the points.

Youngstown State at Penn State (Off): Penn State will look to find stability at quarterback before the big match-up with Alabama next week. True Freshman Robert Bolden will start on Saturday, but Sophomores Matt McGloin and Kevin Newsome will also see time. There may not be any clarity after this game, as Youngstown State shouldn’t put up much of a fight. Penn State will win in a romp.

Eastern Illinois at Iowa (Off): Experienced starting quarterback Ricky Stanzi and a strong defense anchor a strong Hawkeyes team. Eastern Illinois will not give Iowa a scare like Northern Iowa did last year. Iowa wins going away.

Illinois at Missouri (-12): Illinois starts the year with new coordinators on both sides of the ball and Ron Zook needing a strong season in order to get off the hot seat. This rivalry game is not a good place to experience growing pains while implementing new schemes. Missouri’s offense should have a big day. Take Missouri and give the points.

UCONN at Michigan (-2.5): Another coach on the hot seat is Rich Rodriguez. The first two seasons have been a struggle for Rodriguez and this season may not be any easier. Like with Penn State, three quarterbacks could all see time against UCONN. The Huskies have become a solid program under head coach Randy Edsall and should be able to pull off the upset on the road against the still unsettled Wolverines. Take UCONN and the points.

Purdue at Notre Dame (-11): The Boilermakers welcome Miami transfer Robert Marve as their starting quarterback and look to correct the turnover problems that plagues the offense a year ago. They’ve drawn a tough task facing a Notre Dame team on the road playing its first game under new head coach Brian Kelly. Purdue keeps it close, so take the points, but the Kelly era at Notre Dame gets off on the right foot.

Northwestern at Vanderbilt (+4.5): Northwestern begins the season with an unproven starting quarterback, but have good talent all over the rest of the field. Combine that with the coaching turmoil at Vanderbilt, and the Wildcats will have no problem winning one on the road. Give the points.

Wisconsin at UNLV (+20.5): John Clay is one of the standout running backs in the country. He should be salivating at going against a poor UNLV defense. This game won’t be as close as the 2007 edition. Take Wisconsin and gladly give up the points.
